Texas, Then and Now.
Dr. Fred Baron graduated from Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He moved his family to El Campo and opened Coastal Plains in 1985 because the area needed a veterinary hospital and he wanted a place to give back. Forty years later, he’s still practicing in the same small Texas town.
A small town doesn’t mean small-town medicine. We’ve been AAHA accredited since 2000, which means we’ve been inspected against a national standard every three years for more than two decades. We’re a Feline Friendly Certified hospital, so cats get specific handling and a lower-stress environment when they’re with us. We installed a ground source heat pump three decades ago, before most practices were thinking about energy efficiency. Dr. Baron has kept up his training in advanced dental surgery, integrative Chinese medicine, and AI-assisted diagnostics as the medicine has evolved.
While the tools have changed, our heart and our compassion haven’t. We treat every pet like our own, and every client like family. Dr. Baron opened this practice to serve the community, and that’s still what we’re here to do.
From Our Family to Yours.
Dr. Fred Baron owns Coastal Plains and serves as medical director. His daughter Rebecca is the practice manager and the Feline Advocate for our Feline Friendly Certified hospital. Rebecca’s son comes in to help with kennel work when we need an extra set of hands.
What makes a difference in a family-owned practice? Continuity. The people helping you make decisions about your pet’s care are the same people you’ll see at your next appointment. They know your pet’s history, they recognize you when you walk in, and they’ll ask about your pet when they see you in town. We see the clients and pets who come here as part of our family, and we celebrate the bond you feel with yours.
Independent ownership means the Barons make every decision about how the practice runs: how we staff, what we buy, how we treat your pet.
When the owner is also the person in the exam room, accountability isn’t a policy. It’s the job.
Independence In and Out of the Exam Room.
When you own the practice you run, the only interests you answer to are the pet in front of you and the people who love them. There are no quotas here. We’re not trying to get you in and out as fast as possible. We’re here to do right by you and your pet.
We refuse to give any pet less than they deserve, which is the best standard of care we can offer. What that looks like changes from case to case, and for the difficult ones, we’re willing to look beyond the usual answer. No matter the situation, our commitment stays the same. We advocate for the pet, and we work with you.
Our best visits are conversations, not ultimatums. We’ll tell you what we see, explain your options, and help you think through the treatment plan that fits your pet and your family. Our goal is to be the team you trust through all the joys and the challenges of owning a pet.
